Lviv National University named after Ivan Franko - one of the oldest universities in Ukraine and Eastern Europe.
Founded January 16, 1661 , when the decree of the Polish King John Casimir founded in 1608 awarded the Jesuit college status of the Academy and the title of university. Formal confirmation of rights Academy and the University was followed in 1758-1759 .

In the 1997-1998 academic year, the full-time students had learned 11 649 , including 2980 full- cost recovery in education , to study by correspondence 3680 students , of which 2543 students payers. The University has 112 departments , four of which were opened in 2001.The main form of scientific training is graduate school, at 1997/1998 academic year to train specialists in the field of 89 human and natural profiles of the full-time graduate has learned 505 people , part-time - 206 people.
