Historians argues strongly that Svyatogorsk originally arose as a defensive point in the south and served our ancestors protection against the raids of hostile nomadic tribes. With this purpose in the chalky hills were dug secret underground passages and caves.Some historians suggest that Svyatogorsk was founded even before the Tatar invasion monogolskogo , ie, until the middle of the XIII century . It is quite possible that in those days there was founded the monastery. For the first time Svyatogorsk mentioned in official documents of the XVI century , when he was one of the patrol points of Kievan Rus.In 1526, the German Ambassador at Moscow court Sigismund Herberstein, in his book Notes on the Moscow business, and mentions the place called the Holy Mountain, which lies in the Donets.

 

The very first evidence of the existence of the monastery belongs to 1624. In the XVI century, the main temple in a small monastery has served as the cave church of St. Nicholas , the fossil in the depth of the cliff.
