St. George Cathedral - the main cathedral of the city of Lviv grekokatolichesky . Its territory has long been the residence of the metropolitans grekokatolicheskoy Ukrainian church.
The first church was located on the mountain, later named Svyatoyurskoy , even in the princely times.Orthodox wooden church and monastery were built by defense by Prince Lev Danilovich about 1280. After the destruction of both buildings Polish king Casimir III ( 1340) on this site was erected in 1363-1437 a new Orthodox church.
Svyatoyursky cathedral was built in 1744-1770 years . , A classic example of architecture of the Baroque period .Construction was started in 1744. Bogdan Meretina project , after whose death the works of S. Fesinger directed ( until 1764 ).
On the other hand there are the Cathedral Chamber grekokatolicheskogo Metropolitan (1772, architect C. Fesinger ). Around the houses are kapitulnye house (XIX cent. ) And the fence with two gates. In the yard built the bell tower (1865).The complex adjoins the garden of the cathedral of St. George .
Since its construction the temple belonged to the Uniate Basilian Order , and in 1816, houses the grekokatolichesky archbishop . In 1946 the church was given to the Russian Orthodox Church. In 1990 he was returned to the UGCC. In April 1991, he returned here of Cardinal John Cardinal Miroslav - Lyubachivsky .In August and September 1992 in the church are buried the remains of the patriarch Joseph slip ( 1892-1984 ), in the crypt of the cathedral next to the tombs of the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky ( 1865-1944 ) and Sylvester Sembratovicha ( 1836-1898 ). Earlier in the first church on the hill Svyatoyurskoy were buried the remains of Prince Yaroslav Osmomysl.
