New Jerusalem Monastery - historically Stauropegial monastery near Istra , Moscow region.
Located not far from Moscow monastery by Patriarch Nikon was conceived as a center of Orthodoxy , the Russian Palestine.Due to this , the neighborhood of the monastery was renamed to the Palestinian way : the surrounding hills called Zion , Mount of Olives and Mount Tabor Hill . Flowed nearby Istria became Jordan, a small convent was named Bethany . In the real Palestine was assigned to the monk, who has made a detailed plan for the promised land and its temples.Since then, planted under the walls of the cloister garden called Gethsemane , and in the shadow of its ancient trees beats holy spring called Siloam font.
In 1919 the monastery was closed in 1921 in its walls, was founded Museum ( since 1935 - the Moscow Regional Museum ).
In 1941, the monastery buildings severely damaged in the fighting , many monuments were destroyed.
In 1959 the museum reopened , restored buildings of the monastery , with the exception of the main architectural dominants - the gigantic tiered belfry of the XVII century .
On Christmas Eve 2007 the monastery was for the office of President of Russia Vladimir Putin.
