The idea of the museum bore writer's widow , Anna Dostoevskaya.In 1917, she left St. Petersburg a year later and died in solitude away from children and grandchildren. All items that were in the house where he lived Dostoevsky, were put out of its St. Petersburg on one of the warehouses for storage and later disappeared , and the materials archive, with some exceptions, were in state archives.
In 1960, an initiative to open the project and the museum in Kuznechny Lane , in a house where the writer spent the last years of his life , gave the architect - painter Georgy Piontek . In this house, Fyodor Dostoevsky lived with his family in October 1878 and lived until his death - January 28 (February 9) , 1881.The museum was opened on the 150th anniversary of the writer in 1971. Great contribution to the creation of the museum made the grandson of the writer Andrew F. Dostoevsky (1908-1968) , brought together a valuable collection , dedicated to the memory of his famous grandfather - later it became the basis of the museum. The museum occupies two floors. On the second floor apartment of the writer and the main exhibit
