Kiev zoo - the largest zoo of the CIS and one of the oldest zoos in Ukraine. It occupies about forty acres. The zoo's collection of about 3.5 thousand of fauna from around the world .It is carried out scientific work on the acclimatization of animals living in distant countries for the conservation and breeding of rare animals such as bison , the Amur tiger, the Przewalski's horse , etc.
Zoo was founded in 1908 by a partnership of nature lovers and there on private donations .His very first winter the animals spent in the Kiev Zoo railway station in the food department which was kindly provided by the commandant's office . Kiev zoo could not find his refuge in the city. For some time the animals quartered in the Botanical Garden of the University.But with each passing day became more and more animals , beasts scared teachers and students, and university authorities soon demanded to vacate the premises . Only four years later City Council gave the zoo five acres of vacant lots and ravines Shulyavska on the then outskirts of the city opposite the recently built Polytechnic Institute ( KPI ).So an expression of two zoos across the road. The relief of the terrain was very difficult , full of gullies with humps and not suitable for residential or industrial construction. Housewarming occurred in 1913. The territory has not been properly prepared, only managed to build a small aviary , cages, fenced grids of the lake for birds.World War I and civil war hampered the development of the zoo.
