Scientific Centre of the Karadag Natural Reserve is Karadag Biological Station , founded in 1914, assistant professor of Moscow State University , MD TI Vyazemsky .
Because of its volcanic origin, Karadag attracted researchers' attention of geologists, such as F. Levinson and others.After them came the biologists and zoologists . The scientists of world renown, such as BK Shtegman , VA Karavayev, contributed to the study of this amazing beauty and unique diversity of natural and mineral reserve. Their work was the description of about 1640 species of butterflies , 215 species of birds, 89 species of fish.Some of these animals and plants found only in the reserve.
Becoming a branch of the Sevastopol Institute of Biology of Southern Seas , the main focus at the biological station , was a study of marine fauna. Dolphinarium was opened , to study the behavior and habits of dolphins and sea lions.
