Temple of the Holy Apostle Simon the Canaanite in New Athos is a unique monument of medieval architecture. It was erected near the place where the Apostle lived . The temple was built on the banks of the river Psyrtsha at the burial site of the apostle , the relics of the period of greatest prosperity of the Abkhazian kingdom in IX-X century.The temple was the burial place of the higher clergy and the center of Sukhumi diocese. The temple was restored many times and has retained its original appearance. At present the temple is open to worshipers and tourists.
