The State Hermitage occupies six magnificent buildings along the Neva River in the heart of St. Petersburg. The leading place in this unique architectural ensemble that has developed in the XVIII - XIX centuries , the Winter Palace - the residence of Russian tsars that was built in 1754 -1762 under the project of Rastrelli .The museum complex also includes the eastern wing of the General Staff building , the Menshikov Palace and the recently constructed Repository.
