Akershus Fortress (Norwegian : Akershus Festning) or a castle Akershus (Norwegian : Akershus Slott) - the medieval castle that was built to protect in Oslo , the capital of Norway. The fortress was also used as a prison.

 

 

is considered the founder of the castle king Haakon V Magnusson.Together with the strength of the Norwegian Tønsberg they were the strongest strongholds of Scandinavia. In 1989, Pope John Paul II celebrated in the square of the fortress Akershus Mass. - This was the first in history when the head of the Roman Catholic Church visited Norway .

In the castle chapel buried Norwegian monarchs : King Sigurd I, King Haakon V, Queen Euphemia, King Haakon VII, Queen Maud , King Olav V and Crown Princess Martha.

 

 

At the present time in the castle are a museum of the Resistance and the armed forces of Norway. The castle housed the headquarters of the armed forces of Norway and the Ministry of Defence.Castle with a chapel and the castle are open to tourists.
